National Essential Medicines List

Introduction

The Malaysian National Essential Medicines List (NEML) was initially approved by the Ministry of Health (MOH) in January 2000.

This list comprises essential medicines that address the primary healthcare needs of the majority of the population.
  • These medicines, in suitable dosage forms, should be accessible to individuals and communities in adequate quantities, with guaranteed quality and at a reasonable cost.

Main Goals

The overarching goal is to ensure that essential medicines remain available and affordable for the Malaysian population.

Furthermore, it strives to promote efficient medicine procurement processes and encourage the rational use of medicines.

It is also designed to serve as a standardised reference for public and private healthcare facilities, enabling them to create tailored essential medicine lists that meet their specific needs.

Summary

The Ministry of Health (MOH) is the main healthcare provider in Malaysia, and the majority of the population receives treatment at MOH healthcare facilities (i.e. government hospitals and clinics).
